Declarations For My Daughter

The day we found out we were having a girl we were surrounded by our closest friends and family. When the confetti cannons went off and pink and purple hues filled the air around us, it was surreal. It was happening.

When the excitement and the party settled down and I was alone with my thoughts, I smiled and thought, “Wow, it’s a girl!”, but then a few seconds later a sudden sense of sadness hit me, “It’s a girl.” In that moment my heart was heavy and I felt the tears welling up in the corners of my eyes. I thought to myself, “ You know what this world does to women,” and then came the flash of the obstacles and pain that may lay ahead for her.

It was 2019 and I was a woman who was scared by the thought of what my daughter might have to go through in her lifetime. Has there ever been a woman who wasn’t in the generations before us? I quickly composed myself and realized that the currents are shifting and she is coming into a new generation of badass women and leaders.

I decided that as parents there are things that we can do to ensure she is prepared to take this world head on. We will make her feel loved every single day of our lives, we will make her feel valued, appreciated and heard. We will teach and support her to be strong, powerful and fearless. She has limitless potential and I will never let her forget it.

As her mother, these are the declarations I am making over my daughter:

I declare that my daughter will move mountains;

She will be treated with respect and held in high regard;

I will guide her without pushing her past her own wants or wishes;

I will let her make her own decisions;

I will let her know me;

I will share my story with her;

I will love her unconditionally and without judgment;

I will always keep an open mind and an open heart;

I will cherish and honor her soul.

I proclaim all of these wishes and more for my daughter.

What are you some things that you are declaring or wishing for for your children?
